The Wellness Confessional: Bonkosi Horn

Meet the Wellness Confessional, our new monthly series where we ask health and wellness rockstars in Philadelphia to dish on everything from their morning routines to their gym-bag and fridge staples to their motivational mantras. This month, Bonkosi Horn, shop manager at the Lululemon Local Fishtown and owner (by proxy) of Stripp’d Cold Pressed Juice, shares her secrets. Read up—and take notes!

Bonkosi HornThe first three things I do when I wake up are …

Gulp. Check my phone, maneuver myself away from a sleeping toddler and pee.

Morning workouts or evening workouts?

I’m an “any time I can get a workout in person,” because of too many reasons to name, so I schedule my workouts into my work day. #joblove

The one thing in my gym bag I absolutely can’t survive without is …

Gym bag?! Honestly, I’m a minimalist when it comes to the extra stuff I schlep around, so the contents of my gym bag are whatever I can fit into my work bag and usually, that’s just some shade of red lipstick — it helps me look put together post-workout. Luckily, my uniform is head-to-toe Lululemon, which minimizes the need to be a bag lady.

My go-to post-workout products are …

Aesop Deodorant. It doubles as deodorant AND perfume and the smell is an absolute delight.

The three staples I always keep in my fridge are …

Milk, for cereal, obviously. Hot sauce, because almost anything is better with a kick. Tofu, because it’s easy and versatile.

A key part of my wellness regimen that has absolutely nothing to do with fitness is …

I love all products Aesop, so my wellness regimen that’s a little bit of an indulgence includes the Parsley Seed Mask, the Geranium Body Scrub and the Marrakech Perfume.

The mantra I use to get through tough days (and workouts) is …

“Life is like a boomerang—what you give you get back.” And my email signature reads: “Sometimes you gotta create what you want to be a part of,” which speaks directly to what I’ve created for Lululemon Philadelphia and specifically at the Local Fishtown.

The best wellness discovery I’ve made in Philadelphia is …

OMG. I’ve been stalking Lara Zeigler of Backbone [@studiobackbone] for a while now. She’s a Midwestern gem [and as a Midwestern gem myself, I crave the connection to them], the space is cozy and personal and is a designer’s dream. As an architect working with Rohe Creative, Lara has designed one of the most stunning wellness spaces in the city at Paperbox Studios.

My ideal treat-yourself self-care day in Philly would look like …

Ooooh! I like this. I’d start with a Bishop and a Point Break bowl from Stripp’d, a Bonbon Latte from La Colombe, then either Mariel Freeman’s class at Three Queens Yoga OR a private session with Lara Zeigler at Backbone; I’d get in a mid-day sweat at War Horse and then I’d go get my nails done. Fresh sheets on the bed and I’d go to sleep a happy woman.

The best piece of wellness advice I’ve ever gotten is …

Put your oxygen mask on first.
