5 Philly Fitness Activities That Double As Fun Summer Dates

A decade into my relationship, our definition of date night is watching an episode of The Staircase over Indian delivery. This is … sad, right? Right.

So don’t be like me—instead, I challenge you and your boo to jump out of the comfort zone that is your couch and try one (or all, if you’re feeling ambitious!) of the outdoor summer date ideas below. You’ll thank me when your next date night doesn’t end with both of you asleep on the couch with half-eaten saag paneer still sitting in your laps. (This can’t only happen in my house.)

SUP Yoga with Aqua Vida at Spruce Street Harbor Park

When: See schedule here

This one is for all the yogi couples out there: When was the last time you did a downward dog on water? Never? Thought so. These classes, held on stand-up paddleboards on the Delaware River in the warmer months, are the perfect way to switch up your usual yoga-class date and seriously test your balance.

Bonus points: After your sweat session and savasana, head to a hammock in Spruce Street Harbor Park—but not before refueling with some HipCityVeg. (They’ve got a new Spruce Street Harbor Park outpost!)

Zip Line at Treetop Quest Philly

Obstacle Course

When: See schedule here

One of my favorite episodes of Keeping Up with Kardashians goes like this: Scott and Kourtney go to a wellness resort in Arizona to fix their relationship, which involves them attempting to tackle a highline obstacle course, much like Treetop Quest.

The problem: They are forced to rely on their trust in each other to complete the obstacle course and Kourtney, it seems, would not even trust Scott to order her a Starbucks drink with the proper modifications, let alone trust him with her life. It all makes for great television.

Anyway, you and your S.O. likely have a more functional relationship than those two, so you shouldn’t run into this problem. Plus, this brand-spankin’-new Fairmount course, boasting upward of 70 obstacles, zip lines, swings and more, is a veritable blast.

Bonus points: After soaking in the unbeatable park views, head across the river to In Riva (a six-minute drive away) for some smoked salmon brunch pizza. (Yep: That’s a thing.)

Tackle the Schuylkill River Trail

When: Anytime you want

One of my favorite unplanned date days I’ve ever had was an impromptu bike ride along the Schuylkill River Trail out to Valley Forge National Historical Park where we collapsed into the grass before chowing down on the Philly Styles Bagels sandwiches we’d brought with us. We biked upward of 40 miles, got out of the hustle and bustle of the city, and soaked up some sun. In the wise words of Ice Cube: It was a good day. If you have a full day free, I highly suggest copying that idea.

Bonus points: Stop into trailside spots like Conshohocken Brewing Company and Riverbend Cycles to catch up with each other and catch your breath.

When: Thursdays at 6 p.m.

Because what is more impressive during the dog days of summer than planning a date night that involves cooling off in a beautiful pool? Nothing. The answer is nothing. Fitness Alive is hosting these hourlong water workout classes at Riva’s outdoor pool in Northern Liberties nearly every Thursday throughout the summer months (see the full schedule here).

Bonus points: After the workout, dry off and head to Cantina Dos Segundos for a margarita and some well-deserved nachos.

Run with Fishtown Beer Runners

When: Thursdays at 7 p.m.

If happy hour dates are you and your S.O.’s go-to way to spend time together after work, consider this a healthier option—beer still included. The Fishtown Beer Runners meet at Palmer Park every Thursday evening for a three-to five-mile run, always ending a spot that has good beer. So you’ll get a workout in and get some sweaty beer guzzling in, too.

Bonus points: Once your sweat is dry, head to Loco Pez for some tacos and enchiladas.
