Get Out and Explore Philly: Kelly Drive

We’re finally getting a taste of summer with the warm breeze and shining sun. The perfect place to take advantage of the warmer weather is Kelly Drive. Kelly Drive can be a whole lot more than your stay-away-from-76 route.

Your best bet is to walk, jog or run the path that could even lead you down the Schuylkill Banks. Grab some headphones and sneakers and get ready to burn some calories. You could also opt for a bike ride! Don’t have a bike? No worries – you can rent one from the Wheel Fun Kiosk located between Lloyd House and Boat House Row. The open grass areas are great for a quick outdoor workout or yoga session.

If a picnic is calling your name, then pack up with your food and blanket and find a spot with a great view. Speaking of views Boathouse Row is always a beautiful sight, and the Art Museum doesn’t look half bad either! Take advantage of the gorgeous path and soak up some vitamin D while you’re there.

The most natural way to get vitamin D is by exposing your bare skin to sunlight. Vitamin D3 is produced when your skin catches some rays, and it only takes about 15 minutes. Your body can produce 10,000 to 25,000 IU of vitamin D during that time! Compared to supplements this is the way to go. During the winter months you may want to stock up on those supplements, but during the summer take advantage of the sunlight.

Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and helps with normal mineralization of bones. Protect yourself from osteoporosis and more! With new research coming out vitamin D is soon to be a star vitamin. Get started on your vitamin D intake with some time spent on Kelly Drive.
